5 Essential Tips to Keep Your Joints Young

turmeric-herbalJoints are like the glue that holds the body together, connecting bone to bone, creating both stability and movement within the same space. And like any machine – they need to be maintained! Over time your joints can become inflamed and there could also be a loss of the synovial fluid that keeps them “well oiled”. These issues can lead to painful conditions of the joints like rheumatoid and osteoarthritis. Thankfully, there are many things you can do to prevent this from happening and even reverse it once it’s started!

Here are 5 essential tips to keep your joints young:

1. Optimal Diet

In all matters related to health, the foods you consume (and the one’s you choose not to) is of significant importance to your well-being. Truth be told, ‘you are what you eat’, and you therefore want to be providing your cells with as much nourishment and nutrients as possible. This means consuming a balanced mix of organically-grown {local if possible} fresh fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds, and whole grains, while avoiding anything processed or refined, as well as preservatives, pesticides, and artificial additives. In turn, this will translate to the most optimal fuel and building blocks for your body to maintain itself, all the way down to protecting your joints.

2. Exercise

What you don’t use, you lose! The same thing applies to your joints. Not only will proper exercise reduce any joint stiffness, it will also help you reach your optimal weight. Weight gain would otherwise lead to unnecessary pressure on your joints, leading to inflammation and pain. After all, have you heard that ‘sitting’ is considered the new ‘smoking’? There are plenty of reasons to jump out of your chair and get moving! For optimal joint health specifically, low-impact aerobic exercise, strength training, stretching, and yoga all work to build muscle, increase endurance, reverse joint stiffness, and improve the body on a whole. Here are 16 gentle exercises to recover joint mobility via health.com. It would also be a great idea to incorporate Tai Chi and/or Qigong exercises into your routine as similar yoga, they are gentle exercises that incorporate full body movement while focusing on improving spinal alignment and proper breath work.

3. Posture

Good posture will not only make you look good and even boost your confidence, but it is key to easing the pressure off your precious joints. By focusing on elongating your spine (which yoga will help with!), pulling your shoulders back, and visualizing an invisible string lifting you from the crown of your head  – these are a few simple techniques that will support your body frame. Over time, a sluggish posture will show up as poor joint health when gravity begins to take its toll. So, bring your chest forward and lead life with an open heart (that’s how I remember it 😉 )

4. Eliminate Risk Factors

Certainly, correcting the root of any health problem must involve the removal of unnecessary obstacles. For joint health (and more), here are some major factors that need to be addressed, some of which have been touched upon above:

  • Smoking — contributes to an inflammatory state of the body
  • Obesity — creates excess pressure on joints
  • Environmental exposure to toxins — contributes to an inflammatory state of the body
  • Inflammatory foods — contributes to an inflammatory state of the body
  • Poor posture and lack of exercise — creates excess pressure on joints
  • Improper ergonomics — creates excess pressure on joints

5. Herbal Therapy

Ohhh how I love herbs! They are literally nature’s aid when it comes to rebuilding every cell, organ, and aspect of your entire body, while also helping to eliminate any unwanted toxins. Each one has various uses and actions, and in this specific formula by Land Art – they’ve chosen them in order to pack a powerful punch for joint health!

Here’s how:

  • Turmeric Root (aka Curcuma longa) — turmeric has got to be one of the most researched, multi-faceted, and praised herbs out there – and for good reason! More than 7000 published articles have shed light over the past 2 decades on the various aspects of curcumin including its antioxidant, hypoglycemic, anti-inflammatory and anti-cancer activities. Oxidative stress and inflammation play a pivotal role in various diseases like diabetes, cancer, arthritis, Alzheimer’s disease and cardiovascular diseases. Curcumin, therefore, could be a therapeutic option for the treatment of these diseases, given its strong ability to modulate inflammation (Ghosh et al, 2015). SO – sprinkle this on your favorite dish daily and also enjoy it as medicine, your body will thank you!
  • Black cohosh Root (aka Actaea racemosa) — Scientific research has demonstrated Black cohosh to be a herb with strong anti-inflammatory and anti-arthritic effects due to its wide range of phytochemicals (Yang et al, 2013). Identification of its bioactive constituents lending to its anti-inflammatory effect has been explored, crediting it with high potential as a new class of therapeutic agent  (Yang et al, 2009).
  • Burdock Root (aka Arctium lappa) — Another widely commended and popular herb, especially for blood cleansing in Traditional Chinese Medicine, Burdock Root acts as a powerful free radical scavenger (Lin et al, 1996). Essentially, acting as an internal “garbage clean-up” it will help the body eliminate toxins and reduce inflammation.
