This weekend I visited Chicago for the first time and stayed at The Peninsula which is a five-star, five diamond hotel. It was voted #1 Large City hotel in the U.S. and Canada by Travel and Leisure’s World’s Best Awards 2011 Readers Choice. It is located in the heart of the famous Magnificent Mile, where the hottest shopping boutiques and cafes are all aligned ready to be explored! Above is the view from the front of our Hotel where Saks Fifth Avenue and Neiman Marcus provide an instant allure in their direction.
During my stay I visited their beautiful Spa for a 90 minute deep tissue relaxation massage after which I felt completely rejuvenated from head to toe. It was absolutely fantastic! Their staff was incredibly delightful, the tranquil ambiance was perfect, and their facilities were in pristine condition. I only wish I had more time to use all of what they had to offer while I was visiting!
They have complimentary yoga and pilates classes, a fitness centre overlooking Michigan Avenue, and a 25 metre swimming pool. When the weather is hot you can also enjoy their secluded tanning deck and soak up the sun! Located on the 20th floor of the hotel, the beautiful view overlooks the city and literally places you on another level both mentally and physically.
Friday Night— The Peninsula Lobby
Verdict: Atmosphere was classy, elegant and a live jazz band played throughout the evening. Wine list was extensive and held many great choices. Food was very flavorful and service was excellent. Fine dining prices but it was worth it. I would definitely go here again–and their breakfast is fantastic also! (Whole-wheat pancakes with sugar-free maple syrup….numnumnum :P)
Located in the Heart of Magnificent Mile and with award-winning chef Tony Mantuano in charge of the menu, this restaurant is hailed to be the best in Chicago. It’s a fine dining experience with a mandatory dress code–not to mention its apparently impossible to get a last minute reservation.
Verdict: In my opinion, the food was good but no where worth it for the price. It’s a definite SPLURGE and the portions are very small. They only carry Italian wines which if you’re not in the mood for–you don’t have any other option. Service was great, they were extremely quick and on top of the table’s needs. Oh and if you don’t like caviar or truffle–those are the two main ingredients they love to use on the menu. Also, it was located inside a concourse which surprised me since it’s supposed to be very high end. For 5 people our bill was $1000–and that’s cutting the night short. I’ve had better for much less– but if you’d like to splurge the food still tasted nice, just not much of it.
Sunday Afternoon–Giordano’s “Famous Stuffed Pizza”
Verdict: I know Chicago is famous for their deep dish pizza…. so I’m thinking maybe we went to the wrong place. YIKES! It was horrible 🙁 We tried a large deep dish pizza, large thin-crusted pizza, and even the chicken parmiggiano. Service was very slow and we couldn’t stomach our meal. For all that though we only spent $75.
Yay! Finally! We went shopping on Sunday! We took a nice long walk on the Magnificent Mile which would have been even better if the sun were shining, but hey we weren’t complaining! It was a wonderful afternoon and we went to all of the boutiques (LV, Chanel, Burberry, Gucci, etc), Neiman Marcus, Saks, and Bloomingdales. All the stores were stocked and it was a lot of fun. I ended up choosing the YSL Trib Too High Heel Pump in Navy Blue Glossy Leather:
